Iyo City's oceanic climate and flat mountainous terrain are ideal for growing citrus fruits, and production of Satsuma mandarins began around 1907. Currently, Ehime Prefecture is one of the top citrus producing prefectures in Japan, and Iyo City's Satsuma mandarins are particularly tasty, and are shipped nationwide with the Maru "I" mark. In addition, cultivation of "Kanpei," a new variety unique to Ehime Prefecture, has also become popular recently. "Kanpei" is very sweet (with an average sugar content of over 13 degrees Brix! The sugar content of regular mandarins is 10-11 degrees Brix), has a characteristic crunchy texture, and its thin inner sac makes it very easy to eat.
