This chestnut variety is known for its excellent taste and large size, and is considered one of Japan's three most famous chestnut varieties. Nakayama Town is mostly mountainous, and the areas where chestnuts are cultivated, ranging from 200 to 500 meters above sea level, are largely covered with fertile brown and yellowish-brown forest soils derived from crystalline schist, which are rich in humus. The average annual temperature is 15.4℃, and due to its mountainous location, there is a significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Annual rainfall ranges from 1,600mm to 1,800mm, making the area geologically and climatically suitable for chestnut cultivation. During the Edo period, it is said that the lord of the Ozu domain presented these chestnuts to the third shogun, Iemitsu, and received his praise.
